Grounding for Large Campus Environments

David R. Stockin, Jeffrey D. Drummond, P.E., Koddin Nordakker

A comprehensive 51-page technical whitepaper covering earthing, grounding, and bonding systems for large campus environments supplied by high-voltage utility systems. Topics include ground loops, objectionable currents, step and touch voltage hazards, utility transformers, data rooms, power generators, variable frequency drives (VFDs), soil resistivity testing, metal fences, rings around transformers, and human safety.

Online Classes

IEEE-accredited CEU/PDH online courses taught by licensed grounding engineers.

Grounding & Earthing — 101

4 hours

This course is designed to educate the student on why grounding and earthing is important and to demonstrate the electrical phenomena related to the grounded or earthed conductor system. Topics include the fundamental purposes of grounding, earthing, and bonding; electrical circuits and a walk-through of lightning striking a lattice tower showing key engineering factors including resistance-to-ground, GPR, step and touch voltage hazards, and frequency spectrum analysis. Live instructor available during each class to answer questions. All students receive an E&S Certificate of Completion. IEEE CEU/PDH certificates available for an additional $85.

Grounding & Earthing — 102

4 hours

This course educates the student on types of grounding electrodes, testing of grounding systems, and electrical ground faults traced from the transformer to the fault location. Topics include ground rods, plates, concrete-encased (Ufer) electrodes, water pipes, electrolytic electrodes, and more under the National Electrical Code. Ground continuity measurements (2-point) and resistance-to-ground measurements (3-point) are covered in detail. Live instructor available during each class to answer questions. All students receive an E&S Certificate of Completion. IEEE CEU/PDH certificates available for an additional $85.

Grounding & Earthing — 105 (Extended)

4 hours

This extended course is designed to fully work through numerous different types of electrical faults and how different wiring scenarios impact the way the fault is processed and the risks of objectionable currents. The student is walked through an electrical ground fault from the load in a typical home, all the way back through the utility power system to the source power generation — from transformer to transformer and substation to substation. A review of transfer switches and the grounding of standby generators is included. Due to popular demand, this course has been extended from two hours to four hours. Live instructor available during each class. All students receive an E&S Certificate of Completion. IEEE CEU/PDH certificates available for an additional $85.

Grounding & Earthing for Managers — 100M

4 hours

This management course is designed to educate the manager about how electrical grounding and earthing relate to human safety, equipment reliability, data communications integrity, and corrosion reduction. Topics include cost-of-life analysis, legal risks and responsibilities, regulatory responsibilities, maintenance policies, testing protocols, test equipment, and the fundamentals of electrical faults. This course also covers the sphere-of-influence theory, basic information about electrodes, the types of testing related to grounding and earthing, and the basic components that make up grounding and earthing networks. Delivered in a single 4-hour session with a live instructor. All students receive an E&S Certificate of Completion. IEEE CEU/PDH certificates available for an additional $85.
