Solar & Renewable Energy Grounding

Grounding system design for utility-scale solar farms, wind farms, and battery energy storage systems.

Service Overview

The rapid expansion of utility-scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems has created a growing need for specialized grounding engineering expertise. Renewable energy facilities present unique grounding challenges — large geographic footprints, non-standard equipment configurations, DC fault currents, and often remote locations with highly variable soil conditions.

E&S Grounding Solutions has extensive experience designing grounding systems for utility-scale solar farms, wind farms, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Our engineers understand the specific requirements of NEC Article 690 (solar photovoltaic systems), NEC Article 694 (wind electric systems), and the interconnection requirements of major utilities and independent system operators.

We work closely with EPC contractors, project developers, and utility interconnection engineers to deliver grounding designs that meet all applicable codes and standards, minimize construction costs, and ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the facility.

Key Benefits

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the grounding requirements for utility-scale solar farms?

Utility-scale solar PV systems must comply with NEC Article 690, which requires equipment grounding conductors, grounding electrode systems, and bonding of all metallic racking and equipment. For large projects, IEEE 80 analysis is also required to verify step and touch potential safety at the inverter stations and collection substations.

How is grounding for solar different from conventional grounding?

Solar PV systems introduce DC fault currents, which behave differently from AC fault currents in grounding systems. Large solar farms also have very large geographic footprints with highly variable soil conditions, requiring multi-location soil resistivity testing and CDEGS modeling across the entire project area.

Does a battery energy storage system (BESS) require special grounding?

Yes. Battery energy storage systems require grounding designs that address both AC and DC fault currents, high-frequency switching transients from inverters, and the specific safety requirements of the battery chemistry. E&S Grounding Solutions has extensive experience with BESS grounding for lithium-ion, flow battery, and other storage technologies.

Can E&S Grounding Solutions support utility interconnection requirements?

Yes. E&S Grounding Solutions works directly with utility interconnection engineers and independent system operators (ISOs) to ensure that renewable energy facility grounding systems meet all interconnection requirements, including GPR analysis for the point of interconnection substation.
